What to expect at your MRI

A quick walkthrough of preparing for your scan, what happens once you're here, and the safety screening we go through with every patient.

Preparing for your visit

In most cases, no special preparation is required. You can eat, drink, and take your normal medications unless your provider has given other instructions.

You'll be able to drive yourself home afterward — unless you and your provider have decided that medication would help with claustrophobia during the scan, in which case you'll need a driver.

During the scan

Most exams take 45 minutes or less, depending on the body area being scanned; some exams take longer if your provider has requested additional views.

Before your scan, you'll change into a gown or wear metal-free clothing, and remove jewelry, piercings, watches, and anything else metallic. You'll then lie on a padded table that moves gently into the scanner, stopping once the area being imaged is centered. You'll be asked to hold still and breathe normally — an intercom and a squeeze-ball mean you can reach a technologist at any point, and someone is always close by.

The scanner makes a rhythmic knocking or tapping sound while it's taking images. We provide earplugs and headphones, plus a selection of music, to help you stay comfortable.

Your scan is read by a board-certified radiologist at Premier Radiology Services, with a report to your provider typically within 48 hours. Your provider will follow up with you about the results.
